In recent days, local news outlets have reported on the wrongful termination of Jose Gomez, an employee of 99 Cents Only Stores, who notably was the first ever employee of the Houston dollar store chain and who had been employed for 33 years.
Gomez had been asked to move to Los Angeles for another position… only to find out, an hour into his new role, that the company claimed to have “no need” for him – at which point he was fired.

According to the Houston Chronicle, Gomez alleges breach of implied-in-fact contract, fraud, negligent misrepresentation, wrongful termination, intentional infliction of emotional distress, intentional interference with implied-in-fact contract and misappropriation of Gomez's name and likeness.

It teaches us that employers – not all of them, but enough – are willing to play fast and loose with employment contracts, assuming that employees have no understanding of their rights under the law, and no understanding of how to secure recourse.
