When Cars Collide: Common Causes for the Dreaded Crash

If you have ever been in a car accident you know what an alarming experience it can be. What is more alarming are the statistics in the new infographic provided by Insurance hotline. On a worldwide basis, there is a motor vehicle accident every 60 seconds, according to the national highway traffic administration.

Each year, 2,209 Canadians are killed in automobile accidents and 40,000 people in the United States die in accidents involving motor vehicles. Worldwide, the accidents that happen each and every minute kill 1.2 million people. However, the truly alarming fact is that most car accidents are preventable.

Most accidents can be prevented if people just pay more attention to what they are supposed to be doing – driving. The majorities of accidents are avoidable and attributed to four common mistakes: human error, miscalculation, over-corrections and hazardous driving behaviors.

The infographic breaks down the most common types of accidents and the reasons given. It is displayed in a pie graph and about 45% percent of them involve two motor vehicles where one or both drivers may have been able to prevent the accident.

Fortunately, fatal car crashes have been trending downward since the 1970s. In 1970, there were 52,627 fatal wrecks and that figure has dropped to 25,580 in 2012. Most of the reduction is probable due to increased safety standards and laws. Driver awareness may have played a small part in the decrease but with the advent of cell phones and their use while driving, new hazards have cropped up.

The infographic also shows that the average automobile fatalities in America occur more towards the weekend with Saturday being the most dangerous day. Drunk driving is attributed to the cause of fatalities in 32% of accidents, followed closely by speeding at 31%.

However, 16% of deaths by motor vehicle are caused by simple distractions. The infographic is brought to you by insurancehotline.com, where they compare insurance rates for you and ask you to please pay more attention when you are on the road.
