Research Shows Better Web Design Could Boost the Economy

£259 million more would be spent by Bristol shoppers alone if Websites improved their design

The annual World Usability Day event was held at the M shed in Bristol on November 14. The topic of the event was recent research that concluded that Bristol shoppers would spend £259 million more online if Websites were easier to use. The city’s creative and design industry held discussions at the conference.

Before the event, design psychologist and chief executive of Queen Square’s Nomensa, Simon Norris said, "World Usability Day Bristol is a great chance for thought-provoking leaders in web design and information architecture to discuss topical issues and promote their importance. We’d like to thank everyone involved in preparing for what promises to be a great example of peer-to-peer learning, which further underlines the importance of Bristol as a centre of the creative industries."

Every year, Brits spend an average of £1,070 online. Bristol is projected to spend up to £462.7 million online this year with its population of 432,500. Unfortunately, if they experience poor usability such as slow response time or error messages, 56 percent of consumers will not buy from that Website, the research suggests. The sponsors of World Usability Day say this represents £259 million in lost spending. Better Web design is the key to unlocking that spending.

The purpose of the debate was to educate attendees about the need for better online user experiences and the economic benefit this would provide. World Usability Day brings together individuals, groups and organizations that are interested in improving the online user experience. It is an annual event that takes place in 13 different countries around the world including the United Kingdom, United States, France and Germany.
