Police rely heavily on CCTV use to help track both traffic and pedestrian incidents around the town, and without funding to keep the systems going, the department could have a terrible time on their hands continuing to keep the town safe.
It has been estimated that the cost of running the CCTV systems throughout the town cost roughly $70,000 per year. Plans are in place to upgrade the network to better, more reliable equipment, but it can be done unless they receive the funding.
Two cameras in the town are currently out of action as funding has not been adequate enough to fix the problems. The new plan would give CCTVs throughout the whole town and cover almost every main street, but the town’s restaurants, pubs, and shops who provide their own would not be part of the new system.
Paul Mellor, the head of the town centre Pubwatch, said: “The fully working CCTV means police can see an incident as it is developing before it develops into something more serious.
“Currently police are having to contact us to go through hours of footage after an incident has taken place. It also acts as a very strong deterrent to thieves and others who are considering committing an act of crime.”
Luckily, the funding for the CCTVs falls within the budget for the PCC, but there is still an issue of financing, as some discuss the money could be used elsewhere.
