Underpaid Security Guards Are a Recipe for Corruption

Labour President urges security firms to pay guards higher wages

An underpaid security guard is potentially a collaborator to a crime, according to the President of the Sierra Leone Labour Congress, Mr. Mohamed A. Deen. These employees provide safety for their clients he said, “Private security companies owe it as an obligation to themselves and society to improve remuneration and conditions of service for their Security Guards.” It is imperative that conditions of service for their Security Guards are substantial enough to keep them honest, Deen voiced when speaking of owners of private security companies.

In an exclusive interview, at his Wallace Johnson Street office in Freetown, Deen revealed that the average monthly gross salary of Le200,000 for private security workers formed the foundation for deep-seated resentment. “In the true sense of security, clients should not go to sleep when those guarding them and their assets are poorly paid and are aggrieved,” he said. To attract and retain a dedicated and competent caliber of personnel he recommended security companies improve the pay levels of their workers.

Considering the nature of their jobs, companies are not paying their security guards satisfactory salaries. In investigative interviews, most security guards said they have no option but to accept these bad salaries or engage in criminal activities. They say they prefer to take the jobs. A good number of them are between twenty to thirty five years old; many attend school during the day and work at night. The majority of the security guards in the industry also had low levels of education. They have only accomplished Junior or Senior Secondary School level of education, which poses other problems when it comes to comprehension of their responsibilities.
