Big Soda Vs. Michelle Obama’s “Drink Up” Water Campaign

Coca-Cola, a major soda proprietor and owner of Dasani water bottle, has urged restaurants to serve bottled water and charge for the cost and discourage the consumption of tap water.

Andy Bellatti, a well-known writer for marketing Coca Cola products, wrote in his excellent post on Coke's "Cap the Tap" program, the initiative instructs restaurant servers to hard sell "profitable Coca-Cola beverages" to diners, and when patrons request simple tap water, encourage them to drink bottled water instead with fabricated facts about their benefits.

Those goals directly go against the goals of the First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama and the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) for their “Drink Up” water consumption campaign, which encourages everyone to drink more water, both tap and bottled. It’s such a large campaign that the "Drink Up" logo will be carried on hundreds of millions of products, ranging from bottled water to reusable bottles and public taps within the next year.

Fortunately, those who are against the Cap the Tap campaign and in favor of drinking from the healthier tap water are not at a complete loss. Many laws throughout the U.S. mandate that while restaurants can serve bottled water, they must also offer tap water free-of-charge to their patrons that request it.
