Most fad diets rise and then quickly fall in popularity. However, the Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) hormone has been used in restricting diets since the 1970s. Followers of the program restrict their diet to only 500 calories a day along with drops, pellets or injections of the HCG hormone.
HCG is said to block feelings of hunger and is derived from the urine of pregnant women. Proponents of the hormone say it prompts the body to feast on stored fat cells. The diet places tight restrictions on carbohydrates and fatty foods.
Cyndi O'Meara, an Australian nutritionist, swears by the program. Since trying it herself with astonishing results, she has been selling it to her clients. "I did it just over two years ago myself and saw unbelievable benefits," she says. She was able to lose 9kg and keep the weight off after the régime.
She compares the diet to the eating patterns of ancient hunter-gatherers. These civilizations gorged themselves during the summer months, to survive the winter on far fewer calories. "We match up our evolutionary bodies to that type of food that was happening in the winter of the hunter-gatherer," claims O'Meara.
Slimmers, as she calls her clients at Changing Habits, are charged $197 and in return, they are given a course of homeopathic HCG drops, various other supplements, foodstuffs, access to an online forum and relevant literature. The restricted calorie period lasts only a few weeks and then regular food groups are reintroduced to the slimmer’s body based on their specific needs.
