NON-PROFIT GROUP TRYING TO SAVE CATERPILLAR HILL

Sedgwick, Maine – On the top of Blue Hill Peninsula in Maine, there is a ten acre parcel of land known by the locals as "Caterpillar Hill". Generations of families in that area have come to Caterpillar Hill for almost a century to gaze at the majestic natural beauty there. Now, with the land up for sale and in danger of being converted into something else entirely, the Caterpillar Hill Initiative is trying their best to preserve it.

The Caterpillar Hill Initiative was founded about nine years ago in response to the land of Caterpillar Hill being put up for sale. Since their creation, the Caterpillar Hill Initiative has been fighting to protect the land from being desecrated by outside buyers. In that time frame, the price of the land has dropped from approximately $2 million to under $900,000. This is both good and bad for the Initiative; on one hand it puts them closer to being able to purchase, and then protect, the land. On the other hand, it puts any other potential buyers closer as well. The Caterpillar Hill Initiative feels that this year might be their best chance to save the land.

In today’s society, there are fewer and fewer places in which the natural beauty of the land is on display. Caterpillar Hill is one of those increasingly rare locations. The hill has a sweeping 225-degree view of the Maine coastline that simply cannot be recreated. If the land is sold to someone without designs to maintain its beauty, it will be mark the disappearance of yet another piece of America’s natural majesty.

But the Caterpillar Hill Initiative isn’t trying to acquire the land just so it can keep everything the way it is. The Initiative’s master plan is to build an amphitheater that will serve as a community rallying point for a number of activities. This project has been named “The Avalonia Amphitheater Project”, after the ancient archipelago that the hill overlooks.

In order to raise money for their plan, the Caterpillar Hill Initiative has created a page on Indiegogo where concerned citizens can donate to their cause. The plan for the Avalonia Amphitheater calls for a floor made out of approximately 6,000 mosiac tiles. These tiles will have the initials and/or names of donors who helped turn the amphitheater from a dream into a reality.
