S.T.A.R.S LOOKS TO HELP CHILDREN GROW BOTH PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY

Rockville, MD – In the 1970s, studies showed that approximately one out of every 20 youths in America were obese. Less than fifty years later, that ratio has skyrocketed. Now, roughly one out of three kids in America is currently struggling with obesity. S.T.A.R.S is looking to reverse this trend.

S.T.A.R.S (Start Thinking And Reaching Strength) is an afterschool youth fitness program that empowers children and teaches them how they can live a healthy lifestyle. With schools cutting back on recess and lunch time more frequently than ever before, setting aside time for kids to be physically active is more critical than ever.

S.T.A.R.S works with youths between the ages of 4-17 at a number of schools throughout the local area. Programs are specifically developed for certain age groups and interests. S.T.A.R.S works with middle and high school athletes that want elite athletic training as well as with elementary school students who just want to be active and play with their friends.

Teaching America’s youth how they can live a healthy lifestyle is more crucial than ever. The leading killer of men and women in the United States is currently heart disease. However, doctors believe that as many as 80 percent of heart disease cases are preventable with moderate amounts of exercise. By teaching kids today the importance of exercising and eating right, S.T.A.R.S can help play a small role in lowering the prevalence of heart disease.

In addition to all the physical benefits that come with getting up and being active, there are a host of mental and emotional benefits as well. Being healthy and staying fit is a great confidence booster for anyone, but especially for younger people. One of the biggest concerns many parents have about their kids at school is the threat of bullying. Kids that are physically fit are much more likely to be confident and stand up for themselves.

Richard Sutton, a U.S. army veteran with eight years of child-care experience, is the founder of S.T.A.R.S. Sutton is a NASM (National Academy of Sports Medicine) certified youth exercise specialist with 45 hours of curriculum in growth and development training. Sutton also trains in four different martial arts; Boxing, Krav Maga, Brazilian Jujitsu, and Muay Thai. His background in health and fitness is what led Sutton to create S.T.A.R.S.

S.T.A.R.S currently is a travelling afterschool program, but they are in the process of raising funds for a permanent home base. In an effort to fund this and the rest of the program, S.T.A.R.S has created a Indiegogo page.
